III.
Study on the Apostle Paul’s Letter to the Romans – 13
III. Salvation – The Righteousness of God in Jesus Christ (3:21-11:36): Imputed (3:21-5:11); Practically Applied (5:12-8:39); and Vindicated (9:1-11:36)
2. God’s Righteousness Is Through Faith: Application of God’s Righteousness (5:12-8:39)
Part 2 (6:1-14)
New Relationship with Jesus Christ in Life Eternal
a. While the Law exposed the Jews more sin, yet grace increased all the more (Romans 5:20). Indeed, sin reigned in death, but grace reigned through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ (5:21). Knowing this fact, we have a choice to respond: to abuse the grace while continue on sinning; or to acknowledge that we were dead to sin and have risen with the LORD Jesus Christ to be united with Him by a true faith for a new life and thought.
b. The moment we are justified by faith, then we are instantly holy and consecrated, thus, separated from the world to live for the LORD Jesus Christ.
1) In our baptism, we are identified with Jesus’ death and resurrection. In Jesus Christ’s death on the cross, we are also dead to sin in our unity with Him. (6:2-6; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Galatians 2:20)
2) Definitely, there is a mystical union between a Christian and Jesus Christ, when we were justified by a faith in Jesus.
3) Upon Jesus’ resurrection, we Christians also have risen with Him (6:4b, 5b, 8b; Colossians 3:1). Now the death and sin have no power over the Christians. Also we are walking in the newness of life to God.
c. How are we supposed to live this life of faith in God through our identification with Jesus Christ our LORD?
1) We need to acknowledge that our identification with Jesus Christ in His death and resurrection was real and irreversible both in history and fact.
2) Our faith in God is also a fact. By faith we are reckoned righteous by our identification with Jesus Christ.
3) By the Holy Spirit all this unity with Jesus Christ took place in our spirit.
4) Do we live by the fact that we are now united with Jesus Christ and live by His Holy Spirit in newness of life, that is, eternal life?
5) In Jesus Christ we are no more under law, but under grace, so we can sin, but the sin cannot control over us. We are dead to the power of sin and the devil. Are our body members the instruments of righteousness to God? Then, we are not a slave to sin or the devil.
Study Question: Is my life based upon the death of Jesus Christ and His resurrection that my members of body may yield to the leading of the Holy Spirit than my lust?
