Study on the Apostle Paul’s Letter to the Romans – 10
III. Salvation – The Righteousness of God in Jesus Christ (3:21-11:36): Imputed (3:21-5:11); Imparted (5:12-8:39); and Vindicated (9:1-11:36)
1. God’s Righteousness Is Through Faith: Imputation of God’s Righteousness (3:21-5:11) – Part 3 (4:13-25)
a. In the church in Rome, both groups (Jews & Gentiles) need this truth about “righteousness of faith”. To both groups who do not rely on a human effort to perfectly adhere to the law, Abraham is their spiritual father through righteousness of faith.
b. Any Jew who is a perfect adherent of the law can earn his own righteousness, because he could earn his righteousness through his perfect obedience (adherence) to the law. But all Jews are corrupt, so this option is closed to them. Thus, the Jews with the Gentiles who only share the faith of Abraham can receive the promise that they would be the heirs of the World.
c. When YAHWEH gave a promise to Abraham of 100 years old, he did not think God’s promise in terms of a human experience and a physical and material realm. If he did so, he could not have believed in YAHWEH or His promise. But Abraham considered God’s promise from his spiritual perspective. (Genesis 15:6) Therefore, Abraham just “believed” in YAHWEH and His promise that he would be a father of many nations, and heir of the World. Indeed, God changed Abram’s (exalted father) name to Abraham (father of many nations) to reflect a realized promise of God. (Genesis 17:5)
d. Abraham’s faith did not waver or was weakened against hope. Instead, he grew strong in his faith and was fully convinced that God could do any miracles to make His promise come true knowing fully well that all things were possible with YAHWEH.
e. YAHWEH counted (imputed) Abraham’s faith as “righteousness” to him. We who are Abraham’s spiritual offspring believe in God who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord who was delivered for our transgressions and raised for our justification. (Galatians 3:23; Isaiah 53:10) Therefore, God counted our faith in Him as “righteousness” to us. In the end, Abraham and we, his offspring all have the same gift of justification, “righteousness of faith” through faith by God’s grace. (Ephesians 2:8)
f. Verse 25 needs our special attention regarding a process of God’s justifying sinners like us. The death of Jesus Christ our Lord was a sure indication for His redemption for our sins’ penalty. But how do we know that our sins were actually and fully forgiven at the atoning death of Jesus Christ once for all? By raising Jesus Christ our Lord from the dead, God proved Jesus paid the full price for our sins’ penalty, and Jesus as a true man, earned righteousness and was righteous by His obedience to God’s law. In other words, His resurrection was based upon the fact that Jesus’ payment for our sins’ penalty was indeed fully made, and God accepted Jesus’ full payment for the price of our sins. When Jesus said, ”it is finished” (John 19:30), on the cross, a payment was fully made once for all to the Father for a full satisfaction for His justice. Remember that a justification is twofold: A forgiveness of sins (remission of sins), and an imputation of the Righteousness to sinners. Therefore, it was unnecessary that God should hold Jesus dead any longer than the prophesied duration of 3 days, since a remission of sins was already completely done once for all on the cross. Therefore, the Father raised Him from the dead to apply His (earned) Righteousness for the imputation to us, the believers.
Study Question: Why is the resurrection of Jesus Christ necessary for our justification?
