Study on the Apostle Paul’s Letter to the Romans – 09
III. Salvation – The Righteousness of God in Jesus Christ (3:21-11:36): Imputed (3:21-5:11); Imparted (5:12-8:39); and Vindicated (9:1-11:36)
1. God’s Righteousness Is Through Faith: Imputation of God’s Righteousness (3:21-5:11) – Part 2 (4:1-12)
a. In chapter 4, the apostle Paul shows from the Old Testament that apart from the Law (works of the Law), a sinner can be accepted righteous by the righteous God, YAHWEH. How is it possible? The apostle Paul goes on to explain by the examples of Abraham and David to prove it, God’s imputation of Righteousness to a sinner.
b. Even though YAHWEH called Abram and led him to Canaan, until Genesis 15:6, we don’t see Abram’s faith in YAHWEH’s promise in the gospel (Genesis 15:4-5). In Genesis 15:6, finally, it says, “And he (Abram) believed in God.” Thus, Abram’s faith in YAHWEH and His promise in the gospel takes place at least some 600 years prior to the Mosaic Law on the Mt. Sinai. And the same text uses a specific word, YAHWEH “reckoned“ him righteous. A “reckoning” means a “crediting”, or “imputing”. Thus, YAHWEH gives Abram “His righteousness” CREDITED for his faith in Him. In other words, YAHWEH freely “imputed” His righteousness to a sinner, Abram for his faith in YAHWEH.
c. Thus, we know that the righteousness of YAHWEH comes as a “gift” to a sinner for his/her faith in Him. No sinner can “earn” YAHWEH’s righteousness. The righteous YAHWEH does not have an obligation to credit His righteousness to sinners like Abram and us. But in Jesus Christ, the Father promised to do so for the sacrifice of Christ (Ephesians 1:4 & 7). Thus, the basis of God’s imputation of righteousness to sinners is God’s covenant in Christ Jesus, not Abram’s faith. His faith is a condition for God’s imputation of His righteousness.
d. The apostle Paul goes on citing king David’s words in Psalm 32:1 & 2 to establish “imputation of God’s righteousness” in twofold: From Abraham’s case, he is credited (reckoned, imputed) righteous in God’s sight; in David’s case, his sins are forgiven. Therefore, what God freely has done to Abraham and David is twofold: 1) God DOES NOT IMPUTE (RECKON, CREDIT) sins of Abraham and of David to them, so their sins are freely forgiven; 2) God DOES IMPUTE (RECKON, CREDIT) His righteousness to Abraham and David for their respective faith in Him in Jesus Christ.
e. Now to the eyes of the Jewish Christians in Rome church, the circumcision of Abraham is something very important and to be proud of (Genesis 17:1-14). But the apostle Paul says that Abraham’s faith in God’s gospel promise resulting in God’s imputation of righteousness to him comes some 14 years before Abraham obeys God’s command to circumcise. Therefore, Abraham’s act of obedience to YAHWEH’s circumcision command DOES NOT EARN God’s righteousness. Rather, Abraham’s simple and mere faith in YAHWEH’s promise (words) in gospel RECEIVES a free God’s imputation of righteousness.
f. Here, we must acknowledge this simple gospel truth: An act of obedience to God’s command DOES NOT JUSTIFY sinners. Instead, a mere faith (belief) in YAHWEH’s words JUSTIFIES a sinner. And such a simple phrase, justification by faith alone is the simple truth we must hold on to. By this truth the apostle Paul silences the proud Jewish church members and encourages the gentile members in the same church in Rome. Now, to all (both the Jews and the Gentiles) Abraham is presented as a spiritual father whose simple faith, not an act of obedience in circumcision receives God’ free gift of righteousness. Indeed, for his faith in YAHWEH, God imputed His righteousness to a sinner Abraham, while forgiving his sins.
g. Then what advantages does Abraham’s circumcision have? It just shows that God’s imputation of His righteousness to Abraham for his previous faith in YAHWEH (& His Words) has his circumcision as a later sign and seal to it. Definitely, not the other way around. Abraham, David and we, all sinners are justified by faith alone, not by an act of obedience.
Study Question: What is the condition for the God’s imputation (crediting, reckoning) of righteousness to Abraham, David and us? If so, then what is the basis or foundation of God’s imputation of righteousness to believing sinners?
