Study on the Apostle Paul’s Letter to the Romans -02
I. 서론 (1:1-17)
The apostle Paul’s Letter to the Romans is the most systematic body of theological thoughts in the whole New Testament. It introduces the range of the sins found in human race. And then it point out God-promised and God-given salvation to the sinners. And then it delineates what a saved sinner’s new life is all about. By doing so Paul shows us the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ. Interestingly, the Heidelberg Catechism (1563) has copiously composed to mirror Paul’s letter to the Romans in its all three parts: Sin (1-2); Salvation (3-11); Service (12-16).
I. Introduction (1:1-1:17)
2. Thanksgiving and Personal Explanation (1:8-15)
a. The apostle Paul thanks God for the faith of the Roman Christians that spreads all over the civilized world.
b. Paul prays to God for the Christians in Rome as he does for other Christians in places where he planted the church of Jesus Christ.
c. Also Paul has a specific request to God in his prayer. If it’s God’s will, he wants to visit Rome for specific purposes:
i. Paul wants to give “some spiritual gifts” to the Christians in Rome for the strengthening their faith.
ii. Indeed, by doing so it also strengthens Paul’s own faith as well. Thus, it’s a kind of a mutual benefit for both parties, Paul and the Christians in Rome.
iii. The gospel proclamation to the gentiles is Paul’s duty from the risen LORD Jesus Christ. Thus, Paul wants to preach the gospel (good news) of the Son of God among the Christians in Rome, and other gentiles in Rome and other places beyond Rome. Later Paul specifically spells out “Spain” as his place to visit for his gospel ministry among the gentiles (15:24). Here, Paul clearly states that the gospel is for all people, and every one whether he is educated or unlearned (Greek-speaking people and the barbarians). It is so true that the simple gospel truth is for all that whoever believes in the gospel and repents of sins in Jesus’ name will be saved from his sins.
iv. Somehow Paul is prevented from going to Rome until now. So his prayer is very earnest and specific regarding his visit to Rome. If you are one of those Christians in Rome, after reading this letter, can’t you join him in earnest prayers for the same purpose? Therefore, naturally Paul wants to make the Christians in Rome as his partners in gospel preaching ministry.
Study Guideline: In the ordinary church member’s life, what can be an equivalent activity to Paul’s gospel preaching ministry?
*The four states of man in relation to sin enumerated by Augustine of Hippo:
(a) PRE-FALL – able to sin, able not to sin
(posse peccare, posse non peccare);
(b) POST-FALL – not able not to sin
(non posse non peccare);
(c) REBORN – able not to sin
(posse non peccare);
(d) GLORIFIED – unable to sin
(non posse peccare).
The first state corresponds to the state of man in innocence, before the Fall; the second the state of the natural man after the Fall; the third the state of the regenerate man; and the fourth the glorified man
