I. 서론 (1:1-17)
Study on the Apostle Paul’s Letter to the Romans -01
The apostle Paul’s Letter to the Romans is the most systematic body of theological thoughts in the whole New Testament. It introduces the range of the sins found in human race. And then it point out God-promised and God-given salvation to the sinners. And then it delineates what a saved sinner’s new life is all about. By doing so Paul shows us the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ. Interestingly, the Heidelberg Catechism (1563) has copiously composed to mirror Paul’s letter to the Romans in its all three parts: Sin (1-2); Salvation (3-11); Service (12-16).
I. Introduction (1:1-1:17)
1. Greeting (1:1-7)
a. At the outset Paul introduces himself, a “bond-slave” of Christ Jesus. And this bond-slave is called to be the Christ’s “apostle” and set apart for the “gospel (good news) of God”.
b. This gospel of God is promised through God’s prophets in
the Old Testament.
c. This gospel is about God’s Son.
d. Therefore, the essence of the gospel of God is all about His Son, Jesus Christ.
i. Jesus Christ is a descendant of king David in human life.
ii. Jesus Christ is the Son of God in power through the Holy Spirit evidenced from His resurrection from the dead.
e. Now the apostle Paul calls Jesus Christ “our LORD”.
Why Jesus Christ called, “our LORD”?
i. Because Paul and his companion mission team have received grace of God only through Jesus Christ who died for their sins and on their behalf made satisfaction for God’s Justice.
ii. Therefore, all Christians are bought from God’s wrath by Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection. Now all Christians belong to Jesus Christ by having escaped from God’s wrath, so He is their LORD.
f. Why Paul is called “apostle” by Jesus Christ?
i. Because Paul is called by Jesus for a specific task.
ii. The task is to call the gentile nations to have a faith in Him. For in His name, Jesus Christ is a testimony that He has satisfied God’s justice and become their redeemer.
iii. The converted Christians in Rome are “loved” by God and called by God to become “holy people”.
Study Guideline: In a few words, let us summarize each of 16 chapters of Romans before we venture to study this precious Truth of God in depth.
