Study on the Apostle Paul’s Letter to the Romans – 39
IV. Service – The Righteousness of God in Jesus Christ manifested in the Life of Church and Its Members (12:1-16:2)
3. The Best Spiritual Gift from Jesus to His Church – Love (12:9-21)
Part 2. How to Please God Using Christian Love in Our Renewed Mind? (12:14-16)
a. The Christian love is not an emotion, rather it is an action coming from a renewed mind by the Holy Spirit. Emotion cannot overcome its own wall to love the unlovable and the unlovely. Therefore, enemy love and love for the unlovable and the unlovely shows what a true Christian love is all about. All this is possible, because this love is from God as a spiritual gift to us Christians. Here we see the God-given love to be exercised among God’s people regardless of our emotion towards our opponents in the church as was in the Old Testament church, the nation of Israel and Judah. Usually, our fellow Christians are our fiercest enemies in our spiritual life. So Paul touches upon this thorny issue with a divine remedy. (v.14)
b. The apostle Paul commands here the Roman Christians to love with empathy and sympathy in both times of grief and joy among themselves. Also we know shared joy increase its power among those involved, and shared grief decreases its power likewise. (v.15)
c. With the God-given love in our heart, what kind of a common mindset should we have? It is our naturally haughty mindset that has to be singled out and it must comedown hard with a renewal of the mind by the Holy Spirit. How is it possible? When the Holy Spirit enlightens (illumines) our darkened mind by the Word of God, we must examine our own mind and heart critically and accurately that we may have the mind of Jesus for our common mindset. Then naturally, humility is to be at the center of our common mindset that was demonstrated by our Lord Jesus Christ. (Philippians 2:3-8; Matthew 11:28-29)
Study Question: What is the mind of Jesus our Lord that we must have in common among ourselves?
