Study on the Apostle Paul’s Letter to the Romans – 38
IV. Service – The Righteousness of God in Jesus Christ manifested in the Life of Church and Its Members (12:1-16:2)
3. The Best Spiritual Gift from Jesus to His Church – Love (12:9-21)
Part 1 What is the Christian Love as the Spiritual Gift? (12:9-13)
a. As the apostle Paul says in his First Letter to the Corinthians (13:13), the love of God is the best and the highest spiritual gift given to us as members of Jesus Christ.
b. How was it possible for the righteousness of God to be imputed to us, the sinners? It was by the mercy of God shown to the sinners. Such a mercy is the forgiving love of God, in other words. Therefore by the same mercy of God, we Christians must exert to exercise God-given love in our Christian life, especially in the church setting.
c. Without God-given love in our heart, none of us can offer our lives as a living sacrifice to God, because our Christian love is the reflection of God’s love for us.
d. Our sacrificial life is a life of love in action. And the apostle Paul tells us here (vv.9-13) how to live such a life of love.
1) Our Christian love must be righteous, that is, without hypocrisy, adhering to what is good and hating (abhorring) what is evil.
2) Our Christian love makes our self-interest subservient to the best interest of other fellow Christians. Therefore, we must give preference to others in honor, that is, a Christian brotherly love. It does not have our self-satisfaction in its goal. It is another form of the egotism. Thus, our Christian love in action must please the Giver of our Christian love instead.
3) Our Christian love makes us fervent in spirit to serve the Lord and energizes us to serve others in Christ. There is no room for slackness or laziness.
4) Our Christian love rejoices in hope under severe hardships and tribulations, while persevering in prayers.
5) Our Christian love puts our precious (?) privacy in its proper place. In nearing the end times, we shall see the waning of love among people (Matthew 24:12). Therefore, our Christian love must manifest its shining light by setting aside our privacy to serve visiting Christians and strangers in our home. It is to be like in the mode of a hunter who pursues his game. Practice hospitality!
