III.
Study on the Apostle Paul’s Letter to the Romans – 34
III. Salvation – The Righteousness of God in Jesus Christ (3:21-11:36): Imputed (3:21-5:11); Practically Applied (5:12-8:39); and Vindicated (9:1-11:36)
3. God’s Righteousness Is Through Faith: Vindicated (9:1-11:36)
Part 5. God’s Specific Plan Regarding Future Election of the Unbelieving Jews (11:11-24)
a. Is Israel’s prophesied stumbling permanent? No Israel’s current falling away is not permanent in God’s specific plan of election.
b. Then, what could be God’s specific purpose for Israel’s falling away in the apostle Paul’s time? God allows Israel to stumble that the gentiles may receive God’s salvation. Of course, God is working through the remnant of Israel. Yet temporarily God allows the majority of Israel to fall in order to fulfill His purpose to call the gentiles to His own fold as Jesus stated (John 10:16; 12:32).
c. In his days, the apostle Paul desired to see that through the life of gentiles after accepting richness of the gospel Israel may be provoked to jealousy. While Israel was in God’s favor, indeed, they provoked the gentiles’ jealousy.
d. The just budding life of gentiles in God’s grace is so blessed, how much more the life of Israel can be blessed?
e. The first fruits, the Christian Jews was holy and blessed that the gentiles may become holy and blessed by their gospel preaching ministry. Then how much more the blessed life could be to those Jews who once were broken off (natural olive branches), and will be restored to accept the same gospel preached to them? For the gentiles (wild olive branches) to be boastful towards the unbelieving Jews is not right. Neither the Jewish Christians nor the gentile Christians are to be boastful, since all of their salvation is done purely by the grace of God alone. Rather, consider the goodness (mercy) and severity of God that none of us turn to unbelief rather remain in belief in God.
Study Question: Will God allow the unbelieving Jews to be restored to Himself by gospel preaching?
