STUDY ON THE LUKE’S ACTS OF THE APOSTLES -5 (11-5-2017, GLMC, Minneapolis, MN)
I. The Church of Jesus in Jerusalem and Its Expansion to Its Vicinity (1:1-12:25)
1. Church in Jerusalem (1:1-7:60)
1.5. The Holy Spirit Making the Disciples Speak Foreign Languages in Jerusalem on Pentecost (2:5-13)
1) The commotion that the inner group disciples made got the attention of the visitors to Jerusalem and its residents drawn to them. Thus, the miraculous coming of the Holy Spirit was witnessed in Jerusalem by Jews and the Greek proselytes from all over the world (at least 15 different countries).
2) The same God who cursed and confused the language of the builders of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:7-9) made the disciples speak the different foreign languages to let various nationals understand what they heard. By then those builders spoke different languages without any learning experiences and were not able to communicate with each other. On the contrary, this time around, the same Holy Spirit made the disciples speak different languages without any learning experiences, yet those hearers understood what they heard in their own native languages. The former was a curse, and the latter was a blessing.
3) In the new heaven and the earth, there will be a multitude of nations yet all will speak same language to praise God and His Lamb.
4) The response of those visitors was like this: Bewilderment, amazement, and astonishment. Each one heard the disciples speak in their own native languages, so bewildered. These Galileans who were somewhat looked down by the residents in Jerusalem spoke those visitors’ native languages as if they had learned to speak those foreign languages, so the hearers were amazed and astonished by such a miracle.
5) What they heard was the mighty deeds of God. The visitors continued in amazement and great perplexity. Some of them were just at loss, others were mocking at the disciples.
6) One thing for sure is that when the Holy Spirit took possession of the disciples, and filled them, they could not control over themselves.(cf.1 Samuel 19:23,24) That’s why, to the eyes of some outsiders, they sounded and acted like drunkards under an alcoholic influence.
Things to Ponder:
As a church and its members, are we earnestly willing to be under the influence of the Holy Spirit?
