1. 사람의 자유의지와 알미니아니즘
가. 하나님의 절대적 주권 자신으로부터 나오며, 그 누구의 영향도 받지 않으신다. 하나님의 경륜에서 벗어 난, 그 어떤 영향도 하나님께 미치지 못한다. 하나님의 창조세계에서 일어 나는 모든 것에는 하나님께서 제일 원인이 되신다. (욥기 42:2)
나. 만약에 사람이 절대적으로 자유롭다면, 하나님께서 그 경륜에 따라 모든 결정에 자유롭듯이, 사람 또한 그리하여야만 한다. 하지만 사람의 자유의지란 아무 원인이 없이 스스로 순간적으로 결정을 내릴 수 없다. 왜냐하면, 사람에겐, 원인이 없이 선택이란 행동이 나올 수 없기 때문이다. 하나님께는 그 분께 영향을 줄 수 있는 원인이 없어, 하나님의 결정들은 모두 자신의 절대적 주권 속에 스스로 순간적으로 있게 된다. 사람은 그렇지 않다. 그는 원인을 가져야만 결정도 행동도 가진다. 설사 그 게 그의 내적성향이라 할 지라도, 그의 선택은 원인을 전제로 한다.
다. 그렇다면, “사람의 자유의지”란 무엇일까? 아담의 타락으로 인해, 사람은 그 누구도 절대적인 자유의지를 가지지를 못한다. 그 대신에, 그의 영혼도, 의지도, 생각도, 감정도 모두 그 타락의 철저히 영향을 받았다. 단지 도덕적인 판단을 하는 존재라는 점에서 그는 여전히 자유의지를 가지고 있을 뿐이다. 따라서 이 세상에서 사람의 도덕적 결정들은 그의 자유의지를 따른다. (전도서 7:29; 창세기 1:28; 2:16-17)
라. 타락한 사람이 가진 문제란, 아담의 타락 이후로, 사람의 자유의지가 더 이상은 도덕적으로 중립에 있지 않다는 점이다. 날 때부터 죄성에 물들었고, 죄 가운데 영적으로 죽었다. (시편 51:5)
마. 알미니안의 주장은비록 아담의 타락으로 사람은 타락했으나, 그의 완전한 자유의지가 하나님의 영향을 받아서 움직이는 게 아니라는 점이다. 그러나 이런 주장은 자기모순에 빠진다. 왜냐하면 사람은 누구나 원인을 가졌기에 선택하고 행동하기 때문이다. 그의 내적 성향마저도 그의 선택과 행동의 원인이 될 수가 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 알미니안들의 주장은, 사람이 하나님을 선택함이 절대적으로 그 사람의 자유의지에 있다고 한다. 왜냐하면, 사람은 그 누구의 영향을 받지 않고도, 하나님을 선택할 능력을 가지고 있다고 주장하기 때문이다. 그런데 성경은 달리 말한다. (로마서 3:10-12)
바. 사람은 자신이 도덕적인 선택과 결정을 내릴 수 있다. 하지만, 이 타락한 사람이 하나님에 고나한 것을 선택할 능력이 없다고 성경은 말한다. (로마서 8:7; 고린도전서 2:14)
2. 결론
아담의 타락 때문에, 사람은 더 이상 그의 자유의지가 도덕적으로 중립에 서 있지 않다. 되려 그는 항상 하나님 믿기를 선택하지 않는 성향을 가지고 있다. 사람이 항상 하나님을 택할 수 없는 성향을 가졌다고 해서, 그가 악을 행하고, 하나님과 원수되는 자리에 있을 때 변명거리가 되지 않는다. 따라서, 하나님 앞에서 사람은 자신이 가지는 악한 생각과 행위들에 대해서 스스로 책임을 져야만 한다. (로마서 13:23)

1. Man’s Free Will & Arminianism
a. We know that God’s sovereignty comes from Himself, He cannot depend His sovereignty on anyone else but Himself. Nobody can cause God to act or influence Him outside God’s sovereign decrees. God is the first cause of everything happens in His creation. “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.” (Job 42:2)
b. If man is free in an absolute sense, nothing can determine his choices like God’s absolute sovereignty does so. But his free will cannot be exercised spontaneously. For man there is nothing as an uncaused action. Therefore, unlike God’s absolute sovereignty in which God is absolutely free to make His own decision spontaneously without any causes that influence Him, man has a cause to act, so does not have such an absolute sovereignty.
c. What is man’s “free will” then? Due to Adam’s Fall, no man is absolutely free any longer. Instead, man was affected by the Fall, thus corrupt in every part of his soul, mind, affection, and will. Only in the sense of free moral agency, man has a free will. Therefore, man has his “free will” by which he is free indeed in the sense of a free moral agency on earth,
“This only have I found: God created mankind upright, but they have gone in search of many schemes.” (Ecclesiastes 7:29)
“ God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’” (Genesis 1:28)
“ And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” (Genesis 2:16-17)
d. The problem with the corrupt man is that his will does not stay any longer in neutral position after the Fall. He is born sinful, and dead in sin, “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.” (Psalm 51:5)
e. The Arminian understanding of “free will” is that even if man was corrupt due to the Fall, man has a perfect free will not affected by God-initiated cause. Thus, man has no cause determine his choices. Such a premise is self-contradictory. No human being can determine his action without a cause. All of his actions are caused by something including his own inner disposition. The Arminianism emphasizes an absolute human responsibility to choose God, since he has such an ability to choose God without any influencing cause. But the Bible says otherwise, “ As it is written:
‘There is no one righteous, not even one;
11 there is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.
12 All have turned away,
they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.’” (Romans 3:10-12)
f. Man can make his moral decisions, but this fallen man’s inability to respond to the things of God is evident from the Bible, “ The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God;it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.” (Romans 8:7)
“ The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 2:14)
2. Conclusion
Because of the Fall, man is not neutral in his free will. He is always inclined not to seek the things of God. Man’s inability to choose to believe in God does not excuse him to do evil and to be in enmity with God. In his moral choices, he is totally responsible for his evil deeds and thoughts before God, “But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.” (Romans 13:23b)
