STUDY ON THE LUKE’S ACTS OF THE APOSTLES -3 (10-8-2017, GLMC, Minneapolis, MN)
I. The Church of Jesus in Jerusalem and Its Expansion to Its Vicinity (1:1-12:25)
1. Church in Jerusalem (1:1-7:60)
1.3. The Primary Witnesses to Jesus’ Death and Resurrection in Jerusalem (1:13-26)
1) The first inner group among disciples of Jesus is usually called, “The Twelve”. Thus, the replacement for the betrayer, Judas is to be carried out by the remaining body of His Twelve Apostles. Also the number Twelve is a qualified group that has a responsibility and privilege to bring the message of Jesus to the Twelve Tribes of the Jews and gentiles (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 26:7; James 1:1). At the same time the number 120 gathered at the Upper room of Mark John’s house is legitimately considered to becoming a sect of the Judaism to have its own ruling body following the practice of those days. (cf. At least 120 male members are needed to have its own ruling council among the Jewish community.)
2) The qualification for an apostle of Jesus Christ are explained (1:21,22): a) The person needs to be a disciple who heard the message of Jesus personally; b) The person needs to be an actual witness to the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus. Therefore, the unique qualification for the original apostles of the risen Lord Jesus has to do with his eye-witnessing experience of the Resurrection of Jesus. Even the apostle Paul met the Risen Jesus personally and received the apostleship from the Risen Lord (1 Corinthians 15:8; Acts 9:4-17).
3) Seeking the direction and the will of God by casting lots is not an abnormal practice among the Jews (Leviticus 16:8; Numbers 26:55; Luke 1:9). This method of seeking God’s will and direction is done in public matters of the founding the first church of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem. It was not used by a private person for his own matter and interest.
4) A detailed description of the betrayer, Judas regarding his death shows his death is under God’s righteous condemnation, not by an accident according to the Old Testament prophecies (Psalm 69:25; 109:8).
Things to Ponder:
How do we understand and accept the teaching and message of the Twelve Apostles and Paul?
