III.
Study on the Apostle Paul’s Letter to the Romans – 20
III. Salvation – The Righteousness of God in Jesus Christ (3:21-11:36): Imputed (3:21-5:11); Practically Applied (5:12-8:39); and Vindicated (9:1-11:36)
2. God’s Righteousness Is Through Faith: Application of God’s Righteousness (5:12-8:39)
Part 5 (8:1-39)
The Spirit of God Helps the Suffering Christians in the Hope of Glory (8:26-30)
a. The whole creation and we groan in hope for the glorious renewal. Now, the Spirit of God also joins us in groanings. The Spirit of God intercedes for us with His groaning intercessory prayer, while we do not know what to pray in our trial times. We are fundamentally flawed by sin, so we do not exactly know the will of God in things happening to us both good and evil.
b. We are so corrupt to search our own hearts as we ought to, but the Spirit of God can. And God searches our hearts and knows the mind of the Spirit in us. Therefore, the intercessory prayer of the Spirit of God is done always according to the will of God and gets His answer.
c. At the right hand of the God the Father, our Savior Jesus intercedes for us, when we sin. In our hearts, the Spirit of God intercedes for us, when we pray not knowing what to pray for.
d. The providence of God is beautifully described in verse 28. It is God who calls us to love Him and to be His adopted children according to His perfect will. Therefore, no matter what happens to us, it will always accomplish God’s purpose for our glorious salvation in Jesus Christ. The Spirit of God appropriates God’s providence to bring power and comfort to the saints in the midst of suffering.
e. In verses 29-30, we see a series of logical steps in the work of the Spirit of God to appropriate our salvation from God’s point of view (ordo salutis, order of salvation). Such knowledge of the work of the Spirit in our weakness gives us assurance in the midst of doubt, anxiety and fear. God’s salvation of us is unchangeable and immovable, thus is definitely not dependent on us. Our glory is ultimately with Jesus Christ in His already won victory. Nothing we have done helps the ministry of the Spirit to appropriate God’s salvation for us.
1) God’s election for us is established before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). His foreknowledge of His justified ones in Jesus undoubtedly leads His chosen ones to their glorious salvation to be like His own Son, the firstborn among many brothers.
2) We are chosen and predestined to be holy and blameless before God like Jesus Christ according to His purpose of will (Ephesians 1:4-5).
3) We must commit ourselves anew daily trusting the ministry of the Spirit of God for our ultimate glory with Jesus Christ. At present time, we must go through sufferings to be like Jesus.
4) Our daily spiritual exercise is necessary to let the Spirit of God have His ministry of assurance in our hearts: Private and corporate prayers, Scripture reading and meditation of it, communion of the saints (Christian fellowship among brothers).
Study Question: How do we know that the final glory we are waiting for will be ours while we stumble and suffer at present time?
