STUDY ON THE LUKE’S ACTS OF THE APOSTLES -8 (1-7-2018, GLMC, Minneapolis, MN)
I. The Church of Jesus in Jerusalem and Its Expansion to Its Vicinity (1:1-12:25)
1. Church in Jerusalem (1:1-7:60)
1.7. By the Authority and Power of the Holy Spirit, Peter’s Gospel Proclamation Results in Covenant People’s Repentance in Jerusalem (2:37-42)
1) The apostle Peter’s bold gospel proclamation has its fruits now. The covenant people in Jerusalem respond with a broken and contrite heart. (2:37) They did not know what to do with their past sin of crucifying their Lord and Christ!
2) The apostle Peter’s answer is a sweet voice to their desperate heart stricken with their own guilt. Repentance is the first step of the work of the grace by Holy Spirit. The Spirit of Jesus Christ convicts them of their guilt, then grants them not only repenting heart, but also willingness to receive the remission of their seemingly unforgivable sin from God. (2:38)
3) The baptism is here described as a sign and seal of the remission of the sin. They could not be converted through their baptismal ceremony. The baptism itself does not have any merit. Rather, it is a seal to the repenting sinners of the forgiveness of their sins. As Jesus of Nazareth was the apostles’ counselor and teacher, now the Spirit of Jesus Christ is given to the repenting sinners as a gift to comfort and counsel them for their newly found life in Jesus of Nazareth. (2:38)
4) All the benefits of their repentance are open to all covenant people and gentiles all over the world. This is what God the Father decreed and promised before the foundation of the world in His only Son. (Ephesians 1:4,5) Thus, the Father initiates His calling of sinners to turn to Himself in repentance.
5) The repenting sinners need to hear comforting words for the assurance of their salvation, not condemning judgmental words. Jesus of Nazareth was very good at it as prophesied (Isaiah 42:3; Matthew 12:19-21). The baptism they have is a seal and a sign to their salvation from their sin. Not because they are forgiven by baptism, but because they repented for their sin, and they receive God’s answer to their repenting heart by assuring the remission of their sin to undergo its external seal and sign. (2:41)
6) The new converts devote themselves to four things: to the teaching (doctrine) of the apostles, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread (the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer (public prayer). Doctrine is the only true bond of brotherly Christian fellowship among us and the first mark of the true church of Jesus Christ. Thus, the rest three things are fruits and effects of the apostolic doctrine in the true church all over the world.
Things to Ponder:
How can I apply this event in Jerusalem to myself, home, and this local church?
