III.
Study on the Apostle Paul’s Letter to the Romans – 29
III. Salvation – The Righteousness of God in Jesus Christ (3:21-11:36): Imputed (3:21-5:11); Practically Applied (5:12-8:39); and Vindicated (9:1-11:36)
3. God’s Righteousness Is Through Faith: Vindicated (9:1-11:36)
Part 1 (9:1-5)
The Apostle Paul’s Sorrowful Heart for His Fellow Israelites (9: 1-5)
a. As we know in Romans chapters one through eight, the Apostle Paul explains us the sinner’s need for salvation, and God’s provision for him in Jesus Christ, God’s Righteousness. Now in chapters nine through eleven, he deals with the seeming problem of the nation of Israel who flatly rejected their Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth.
b. But if God could reject His covenant people, the Israel, can any Roman Christian be also rejected by God someday?
c. The Apostle Paul tries to assure the recipients of his letter that God absolutely loves them from eternity in Jesus and He will never forsake His elect including the Roman Christians.
d. Currently, the unbelieving Israel who rejected Jesus of Nazareth as their only Messiah are separated from God. But he and his fellow Christians in Rome are not to be separated from the love of God in Christ.
e. Here, we see the heart of a missionary by name Paul who would not want to see God’s covenant people eternally rejected by God for God’s own honor and glory. We cannot say Paul becomes sentimental about his countrymen. No, rather he is well aware of God’s holy name that could be marred, if His own covenant people were rejected by Him eternally.
f. In Exodus 32:31-32, Moses as a type of Jesus Christ, pleads with YAHWEH to save the corrupt and idolatrous Israel at the expense of his own life. Moses is so concerned about the faithfulness and the honor of God’s holy name that he was willing to be lost eternally to save God’s face, so to speak. A complete abolition of Israel could absurdly be interpreted by His enemies God’s inability to lead them to the promised land. (Exodus 32:11-13) Thus, the Apostle Paul’s wish can be in line with Moses’ plea with YAHWEH for His own Honor, because YAHWEH has invested in the nation of Israel so much.
g. In Galatians 3:13, the Apostle Paul shows us Jesus being cursed for His people, so Paul is not completely out of line to plead with God for his wayward countrymen’s salvation at his own expense.
Study Question: As a disciple of Jesus Christ, are we supposed to be ready to die for God’s people when they go astray?
