(The Heidelberg Catechism)
<제 2 부>
(LORD’s Day 27)

Question 73. Why then does the Holy Spirit call baptism
the washing of regeneration and the washing away of sins?
Answer:
God speaks in this way for a good reason. He wants to teach us that the blood and Spirit of Christ remove our sins just as water takes away dirt from the body. (1) But, even more important, He wants to assure us by this divine pledge and sign that we are as truly cleansed from our sins spiritually as we are bodily washed with water. (2)

(The Holy Spirit uses the thing(s) signified and the signs interchangeably in this analogy for the baptism. In fact, the thing signified has its own cleansing nature about pollution of our soul, just as the sign itself has its own same cleansing nature about our physical body. By such an analogy we can see how intensely and earnestly the Holy Spirit wants to confirm what He has promised to us in His covenant: Washing away of our sins, and getting spiritual rebirth to a new life in Christ.)
