(Q & A 70 is about the contents of the promise of God that the holy baptism signifies and seals. As our sins are not washed away with the holy baptism itself, surely we are washed away with two entities: the shed Blood of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. First, our sins are washed away with the once-for-all sacrifice in the shed blood of Jesus Christ on the cross. It results in our receiving of the forgiveness of sins from God in His grace. Second, we are washed away with the Holy Spirit for our renewal of the mind and our sanctification to be members of Christ. It results in our changed life: Our gradual death to sin and our gradual life of holiness and blamelessness.)
