(The Heidelberg Catechism)
<제 2 부>
(LORD’s Day 26)
Question 69. How does holy baptism signify and seal to you that the one sacrifice of Christ on the cross benefits you?
Answer: In this way:
Christ instituted this outward washing (1) and with it gave the promise that, as surely as water washes away the dirt from the body, so certainly His blood and Spirit wash away the impurity of my soul, that is, all my sins. (2) |

(The holy baptism signifies God’s promise: Forgiveness of sins and Eternal Life. Also it seals the authenticity and assurance of God’s promise. But the mode of water baptism and the amount of water being used do not matter with the holy baptism’s legitimacy and its power. Rather its sign is a clear indicator that as water cleanses our body, God promises to take away my sins with the blood of Christ and the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the holy baptism in itself DOES NOT have any magical power to wash away my sins. Rather it only signifies and seals God’s promise of forgiveness of sins and the eternal life to us. Thus we reject a baptismal regeneration unto salvation by the Roman Church as unbiblical and superstitious.)
