(The Heidelberg Catechism)
<제 2 부>
(LORD’s Day 25)
Question 66. What are the sacraments?
Answer: The sacraments are holy, visible signs and seals. They were instituted by God so that by their use he might the more fully declare and seal to us the promise of the gospel. (1) And this is the promise: that God graciously grants us forgiveness of sins and everlasting life because of the one sacrifice of Christ accomplished on the cross. (2)
Bible References:
- Genesis 17:11; Deuteronomy 30:6; Romans 4:11.
- Matthew 26:27-28; Acts 2:38; Hebrews 10:10.
(1. In the Bible, we cannot find the word ”Sacrament”, but in the Roman period, in Latin, it means a “religious act” or a “sacred matter”. In Christianity, we use it to mean, baptism and the Lord’s Supper. God instituted it, and it’s holy not because the “water” of baptism and “bread and wine” of the Lord’s Supper are in and of themselves holy and special. Rather, they are set apart for the services of God, so they are holy. They are pledges of Christ’s sacrifice, so we honor them as valued guarantees from God for our salvation. They are both visible and edible for our weaknesses. So they are called God’s “means of Grace” for us.
- They are Signs for the invisible things. They are not natural, rather instituted by God to declare His promise to us in the gospel of Jesus Christ more fully. They are seals attached to the Word to assure us that His Word is trustworthy and genuine. They direct us to the Promise of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They as signs and seals only depict and explain what God’s promise of the gospel is. They DO NOT WORK as God works in us, though. Only the Spirit of God DOES work in us by use of these means. Without the Word, they are idols.)
