(The Heidelberg Catechism)
<제 2 부>

Question 60. How are you righteous before God?
Answer: Only by true faith in Jesus Christ. (1) Although my conscience accuses me that I have grievously sinned against all God’s commandments, have never kept any of them, (2) and am still inclined to all evil, (3) yet God, without any merit of my own, (4) out of mere grace, (5) imputes to me the perfect satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ. (6) He grants these to me as if I had never had nor committed any sin, and as if I myself had accomplished all the obedience which Christ has rendered for me, (7) if only I accept this gift with a believing heart. (8)

(The “true faith” by which we accept the Truth and the gospel of Jesus Christ is just a mere means. The “true faith” is not by and in itself our meritorious achievement to entitle God’s favor.
Remember that out of a fallen race, Noah has found “God’s favor”? God grants Noah His favor in terms of grace. Therefore, the “true faith” is a God-given gift to the elect sinners. God has given His elect this gift of “true faith” that by which His elect might accept the perfect satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ with a believing heart.)
(We are not acceptable to God because of worthiness of our own true faith. The gift of God-given “true faith” is only means whereby we accept the righteousness of Christ as our own with a believing heart. That’s how we become righteous in God’s eyes. The “true faith” has its basis the Christ and His finished works, also its object Christ and His finished works. When we embrace gospel of Christ with a believing heart and a true faith, all our sins and evil inclination are acquitted because of and based upon the Christ and His finished works.)
(The summary of how we become justified in God’s eyes is like this: a. In eternal counsel of God’s election, God chose certain number of people to be His own to justify them in Christ, Ephesian 1:4-5; b. The resurrection of Christ proves that His substitutionary death satisfied God’s justice for our justification, Romans 4:25; c. At a specific time, we are personally and individually justified in Christ by a God-given “true faith”, Philippians 3:9; d. At the last judgment all God’s elect will be declared publicly “justified” and “righteous” in the Judge, Christ our LORD, Matthew 25:23)
