Question 2. How many things are necessary for thee to know, that thou, enjoying this comfort, mayest live and die happily?
Answer: Three; (1) the first, how great my sins and miseries are; (2) the second, how I may be delivered from all my sins and miseries; (3) the third, how I shall express my gratitude to God for such deliverance. (4)
- Matthew 11:28-30; Luke 24:46-48;
1 Corinthians 6:11; Titus 3:3-7.
- John 9:41; 15:22.
- John 17:3; Acts 4:12; 10:43.
- Ephesians 5:8-11; 1 Peter 2:9-10.
- Romans 6:1-2,13.
- 나의 죄와 그에 따른 비참함을 앎 (sins and its misery).
1) 사도 바울의 로마서가 이 세가지 사실을 잘 드러내고 있다. 로마서 1:1-3:20 (죄와 그에 따른 비참함);
2) 로마서 3:21-11:36 (구속: 어떻게 거기서 벗어나게 되는가?);
- 또한 이 세 가지 사실들을 주제로 다룬 ‘사도신경’(Apostles Creed), ‘열 가지 말씀들 (십계명:Ten Words, or Ten Commandments:)’, ‘주님의 가르치신 기도 (주기도: Lord’s Prayer, a Prayer taught by the Lord)’를 통하여 나에게 믿음의 길을 가르치는 데 사용하고 있다.
1) 우리와 우리 자녀들이 죄 가운데 잉태되었고, 죄 가운데 태어나서, 본래 하나님의 진노 아래 있다 (죄와 그 비참함: Sin and its Misery);
- 은혜의 언약을 통하여, 예수 그리스도의 보혈로 우리의 죄들을 께끗하게 성령과 물로써 씻어 주시고 표식으로 (Sign:물세례) 인을 (Seal) 치셨다 (죄에서 건짐을 받음 – 구속받음: Salvation, or Deliverance from Sin and its Misery);
Life of Thankfulness, or Service)
- This one teaches how children of God can enjoy their only “comfort” that was described in Q & A throughout their whole lifetime.
- When we know thoroughly three facts, we will enjoy our only comfort. All the rest questions and answers (LORD’s Day 2- LORD’s Day 52, Q & A 3-129) are in fact detailed explanations of three facts below.
1) Knowledge of my sin and its misery (LORD’s Day 2-4).
2) How to be delivered from such sin and its misery (LORD’s Day 5- 31).
3) How to live a life of service with gratitude upon the deliverance from the sin and its misery (LORD’s Day 32-52).
- We must apply these facts to our daily life without ceasing. These facts are not divided and separated from each other. The Apostle Paul’s Letter to the Romans has manifested these three facts.
1) Sin and its misery (Romans 1:1-3:20).
2) Salvation from such sins and misery (Romans 3:21-11:36).
3) Service with a Life of Gratitude (Romans 12:1-16:27).
- The Apostles’ Creed, the Ten Words/Commandments, and the Lord’s Prayer also teach us these three facts to lead us to the way of faith.
- The teachings at the Infant Baptism, and the Lord’s Supper also teach us these three facts.
1) We and our children were conceived and born in sin and under the wrath of God by nature (Sin and its misery).
2) By the Covenant of Grace, God cleanses us our sins by the blood of Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit and the water, and seals it with the sign, the water baptism (Salvation or Deliverance from Sin and its Misery).
3) Out of the deep gratitude to God for His gracious Covenant to save us, we are called to live a life to Him alone and to live a new life of obedience to Him through the Church (Life of Thankfulness, or Service)
