(The Heidelberg Catechism)
<제 2 부>
(LORD’s Day 5)
Question
- Since, according to God’s righteous judgment we deserve temporal and eternal punishment, how can we escape this punishment and be again received into favor?
Answer: God demands that His justice be satisfied. (1) Therefore we must make full payment, either by ourselves or through another. (2)

- In the 1st Part, we have learned that according to God’s righteous judgment we must get punished temporarily and eternally. Now in the 2nd Part, we will find out how to pay the penalty imposed upon us by the righteous judgment of God and how we can be accepted into His favor again.
- In His wrath, God curses us according to the promise He made in His covenant with Adam. The justice of God demands its satisfaction by requiring sinner to pay the full price for the punishment for his sins.
- Even if we pay the full price for our sins, that will not automatically grant us a full restoration to the innocent state before the Fall where a man has a full fellowship with His Creator. What we actually do is that we just pay a full price for the punishment for our sins to satisfy the justice of God.
- The justice of God is fully satisfied only when the sinner pays a full price for the punishment for his sins.
- The price for the punishment for a “man’s sins”, the Original and actual, must be paid by no other creature but a “man”. That can be done either by the sinner himself, or by someone else for him.)
