(LORD’s Day 35)

Question 98.But may images not be tolerated
in the churches as “books for the laity”?
Answer:
No, for we should not be wiser than God.
He wants His people to be taught not by means of dumb images (1) but by the living preaching of His Word. (2) |

(In this last question of LORD’s Day 35, we learn why the images-pictures should not be used in the churches to worship our living God. The Roman church insists that the laity who does not understand the Latin Bible, or Latin service in the church must be instructed with images, statues, and relics. Instead of presenting Jesus Christ from the Bible to the ignorant, the Roman church chose to go against the Second Commandment to teach the ignorant about God. The Protestant reformers instead instructed the ignorant presented them the gospel from the Bible and taught them to study the Bible for themselves. This Heidelberg Catechism was living proof of how truthful and faithful those reformers were to the Bible and its command. No wonder in those days, the Bible translations were widely spread among the Protestant reformers, and the ignorant were greatly benefited by it very much so. But since Jesus was a true human being like us, why can we not use His pictures to teach the ignorant the true gospel? In the Person of Jesus of Nazareth, His humanity and divinity resided together. Both natures cannot be separated from each other. Thus, without thinking of His divine nature, we cannot think of His human nature alone.)
