(The Heidelberg Catechism)
(LORD’s Day 31)

(The Gospel proclamation has a promise of God in it. Therefore, the listeners are responsible to the effects of the Gospel proclamation. When they respond to the Gospel proclamation and accept its promise, for the sake of the Christ’s merits, the remission of their all sins is really applied to each and every one of those believers.)
(Therefore, the Gospel proclamation must include the promise of the great unspeakable bliss and the eternal woe to the listeners. Also it must show the essence of the promise, the way to the Kingdom of God, the Christ Jesus, John 14:6. Then, whoever calls on His name in true faith will surely receive a gift of the content of the promise: Forgiveness of all sins and Eternal Life, Acts 4:12. To such believers, the Kingdom of God is opened. To the obstinate and the hypocrites, the same Kingdom of God is closed by the Gospel proclamation.)
