(The Heidelberg Catechism)
<제 2 부>
(LORD’s Day 28)

Question 77. Where has Christ promised that he will nourish and refresh believers with his body and blood as surely as they eat of this broken bread and drink of this cup?
Answer:
In the institution of the Lord’s Supper: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes (1 Cor. 11:23-26).(1)
This promise is repeated by Paul where he says: Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf (1 Cor. 10:16–17).(2)

(The day and time Jesus Christ chose to institute the Lord’s Supper is significant: 1. There is now an end to all Old Testament sacrifices. And He substitutes a new sacrament that must be observed from now on. As a Paschal Lamb, Christ Himself accomplishes and finally abolishes the rite of Passover by offering His body as a final Paschal Lamb; 2. Christ chose the time and circumstance of its institution just before His arrest and death that He may teach His disciples and us how important this sacrament is for all His followers; 3. Above all, Christ wants this sacrament to be a constant memorial for all His followers of His imminent death by then.)
(Now the particular material Christ uses to institute the new sacrament by substituting the Old Testament Passover and all other sacrifices DOES not matter to His followers. It means the bread for His Supper does not have to be “unleavened” or baked in a particular and certain way. Likewise, the wine does not have to be an only thing to drink in this sacrament, either. The only thing really matters, is that the thing signified and sealed is the content of His promise to His disciples and the whole church of Jesus Christ.)
(This sacrament is what we must do, since it’s given as His command. His disciples and, not certain group in the church, but the whole church must participate in the promise of God signified in this sacrament and the benefits of His death that is the making Old Testament realized and fulfilled. At the same time, in His blood, Christ establishes a New Covenant so that all members of His body may have a promise of remission of sins, and a communion with Christ by faith in Him as the last Paschal and slain Lamb without observing all the Old Testament sacrifices any longer. That’s why it is called a cup of blessing, or thanksgiving for us to take all the benefits of His suffering and death without resorting to the Old Testament sacrifices.)
