116문) 기도가 왜 그리스도인들에게 필요하나요?
답) 왜냐하면, 기도는 하나님께서 우리에게 요구하신 감사의 주요부분이기 때문입니다. (1) 그리고 하나님께서는 당신의 은혜와 성령님을 주십사고
간절하게 쉬지 않고 (미리) 감사하며 기도하는 사람들에게만 당신의 은혜와 성령님을 주시기 때문입니다. (2)

Question 116. Why is prayer necessary for Christians?
Answer:
| Because it is the chief part of thankfulness which God requires of us,(1) and because God will give His grace and Holy Spirit only to those who earnestly and without ceasing ask them of Him, and render thanks unto Him for them.(2)

제 116 문답은 왜 우리에게 기도가 필요하며, 무엇을 기도해야하는 지를 다루는 것으로 시작한다. 우리 죄들을 정죄하시는 하나님께서 우리를 건져 구원하심에 대한 감사의 표현이 기도의 주요기능이다. 우리가 이미 우리의 죄와 그 비참함으로부터 구원받았다면, 이제는 하나님의 은혜와 그분의 성령님의 도우심으로 날마다 살아가야만 한다. 그러므로, 우리는 기도로써 우리의 감사를 하나님께 표현해야 하는 것이며, 또한 그분의 은혜와 성령님을 끊임없이 기도로 감사하면서 간구하는 것이다.
빌립보서 4:6-7에서 사도바울은 걱정 말고 우리가 감사하며 하나님께 기도하라고 가르치신다: “아무것도 염려하지 말고, 오직 모든 일에 너희 구할 것을 감사함으로 하나님께 아뢰라. 그리하면 우리의 지각을 뛰어 넘는 하나님의 평화가 그리스도 예수 안에서 우리의 마음과 생각을 지키시리라.”
첫째, 상식적으로는 우리의 요구를 하나님께 아뢰는 것이 기도다. 하지만, 실제로는 기도의 첫번째 기능은, 우리를 죄에서 구원하심에 대한 마음에서 우러나는 감사를 하나님께 드러내는 표현이다.
둘째, 우리가 날마다 그리스도인으로 살려면, 우리 영혼의 안팎으로 어려움에 부딪힌다. 따라서 우리가 이 세상을 사는 동안, 하나님께서는 우리를 위해 베풀어 주시는 수단이 있다. 즉, 그분의 은혜와 성령님의 도우심이다. 기도란 하나님의 주시는 도움의 수단을 (은혜와 성령님) 얻기 위한 도구로 우리에게 허락하신 것이다. 이 기도라는 도구를 사용하여서 우리는 성령님과 하나님의 은혜를 간구하여, 그분을 영화롭게 하려고 살아 가는 것이다. 이것이 기도의 두 번째 기능이다. 하나님께서 우리의 기도에 응답해 주실 것을 우리가 확신하며, 우리의 기도가 이미 이루어 진 줄로 믿을 때, 우리는 기도를 감사하는 마음으로 하게 된다. 마치 우리가 기도를 시작하기도 전에 하나님께서는 이미 우리의 기도에 응답하여 주신 것처럼 생각하고 우리는 감사해야만 한다. 또 더욱 열성을 다해 간절히 은혜와 성령님을 주시라고 기도하여야만 하는 것이다.
(Q & A 116 starts with the reason why we need to pray and what to pray for. The prayer is a chief part of our gratitude to God for saving us from His condemnation of our sins. Now once we are saved from our sins and misery, we must live by God’s grace and His Holy Spirit.
Therefore, we need to pray to express our thankfulness to God and to receive unceasingly God’s grace and His Holy Spirit.
In Philippians 4:6-7, the Apostle Paul instructs us to pray without any worries and rather with thanksgiving! It goes like this:
6Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
First, a commonly known thing about our prayer is that it is our asking God of our needs. But in reality, it goes a lot deeper than that. It is our chief expression of heartfelt thankfulness to God for His salvation!
Second, in our daily Christian life, we struggle with various things within and without ourselves. Therefore, God has a provision for our daily struggling Christian life as long as we live on earth. That is a daily means to live by. By this means we ask God of His grace and Holy Spirit to sustain our Christina life to glorify Him. That’s the second function of the Christian prayer. When we have a sure confidence that God hears our prayers and a belief that our requests are already given to us, then we earnestly pray with a thankful heart for the given answers to our prayers. It is like God has given us His answer before even we utter our prayers.)
