(Q & A 113 deals with our heart desire. In a sense, this Commandment is the key to the whole Ten Commandments. Indeed, we can get a wrong impression that in the Second Tablet, the Seventh and Eighth Commandments are dealing with only our outward actions. But here in the Tenth Commandment, we see the root cause of why such Commandments are given, the human sinful desire.
Not all desire is sinful. Some desires such as hunger and thirst are given by God as natural, thus legitimate for the sustenance of our body. Also the spiritual desire is planted by God in our hearts as well, for instance in Psalm 84:2. Also the desire for eternity is planted by God in the hearts of men, Ecclesiastes 3:11.
Only when our desires are contrary to the Commandments of God, they are sinful. Yet in that incident, we are not commanded to suppress a sinful desire as soon as it arises in our hearts, Roman Church. Nor we must eradicate all natural desires, Hinduism & Buddhism.
Yet not even the least desire contrary to any of God’s Commandments may arise in our hearts.
Our apathy and passivity towards sin are also condemned. Rather, we must continually with whole heart hate sin, and delight in all righteousness.)
