112문) 제 9계명은 무엇을 요구하시는가요?
답) 내가 그 누구에 대해서도 거짓증언을 하지 말아야 하며,(1) 누구가 되었든 그 사람의 말을 다르게 말하지 말아야 하고.(2) 그 누구가 되었든, 그의 등뒤에서 그를 헐뜯거나, 비방하는 사람이 되지 말아야 하고,(3) 그 사람의 말을 들어보지 않고서 그를 정죄하거나, 지나치게 판단하는 일에 동참하지 말아야 합니다. (4)
하나님의 격노하심으로부터 오는 고통을 생각해서라도 모든 거짓말과 속이는 것들을 피해야 할 뿐만 아니라,(5) 이것들이 모두 사탄의 일들임을 알아야만 합니다.(6)
그리고 재판이나, 정의에 관한 일들에서나, 그 외의 다른 모든 일들에서도, 나는 진실을 사랑해야만 하고, 정직하게 진실을 말해야만 하며, 진실을 고백해야만 합니다.(7)더군다나 가능한 한 나의 모든 힘을 다하여, 내 이웃의 선한 (명예로운) 이름을 방어해 주고, 더 드러나게 해 주어야만 합니다. (8)

| Question 112. What does the ninth commandment require?
Answer: That I bear false witness against no one,(1) twist no one’s words,(2) be no backbiter or slanderer,(3) join in condemning no one unheard or rashly;(4) but that on pain of God’s heavy wrath, I avoid all lying and deceit(5) as the very works of the devil;(6) and that in matters of judgment and justice and in all other affairs, I love, speak honestly, and confess the truth;(7) also, insofar as I can, defend and promote my neighbor’s good name.(8)

112 문답은 제 아홉 번째 계명에서 우리에게 금하는 것과 우리가 마땅히 하여야 할 것들을 모두 다룬다. 일반적으로 우리 이웃에 대해 진실만을 말하라고 명한다. 진리는 두 가지로 이해된다: 먼저, 진리는 절대적인 주체이며; 또한 진실은 참된 사실을 뜻한다. 왜 우리가 항상 진실만을 말해야만 할까? 야훼, 아버지 하나님 (신명기 6:4), 아들 하나님 (요한복음 14:6), 그리고 성령 하나님께서 (요한일서 5:6) 모두 진리이시기 때문이다.
따라서, 야훼 하나님을 모르고서는, 진리를 알 수가 없다. 따라서, 그 분에 대해 진실을 말 할 수 또한 없게 된다.
로마서 3:4은 자연인 (하나님을 모르는, 중생치 않은 사람)을 거짓말장이라고 칭한다. 사탄은 모든 거짓들의 아비이며, 그 안에는 진리도 진실도 없다. 따라서, 사탄의 자녀들도 모두 거짓말장이다. 그들에겐 진리도 진실도 없다. (요한복음 8:44)
1. 법정에서 거짓을 말하면 위증의 죄가 되며 이를 금한다.
2. 이웃의 말들을 내가 비틀어 달리 전하면, 진실을 크게 훼손하는 것으로 이 또한 해서는 안 된다.
3. 이웃의 뒤에서 그를 헐뜯거나 비방하는 것을 금한다. 그에 대해 악하고 해치려는 의도로 말할 때에는, 설령 정확한 진실만을 그 이웃에 대해 말한다 할지라도 악하며 죄가 된다.
4. 이웃이 말하기도 전에 그의 말을 듣지 않고 미리 그를 정죄하거나, 그에 대해 가혹하게 말하는 것 또한 아홉 번째 계명을 어기는 죄가 된다.
이러한 거짓말장이에 대해서 그가 마지막으로 가는 곳이 하나님 나라가 아니라, 불에 타는 호수라는 점을 우리에게 경고한다. 요한 계시록 21:8; 22:15.)
(Q & A 112 deals with both the positive and the negative sides of the Ninth Commandment. It is about our speaking the truth regarding my neighbor in general. Here the Truth means twofold: the Truth itself; the true Fact. In this Commandment, we deal with speaking the Truth as “the true Fact”. Why should we speak always the truth? Because our triune God is the Truth: YAHWEH, the Father is the Truth, Deuteronomy 6:4; YAHWEH, the Son is the Truth, John 14:6; YAHWEH, the Spirit/Holy Spirit is the Truth, 1 John 5:6. If this is the case with the Truth, without knowing the Triune God, YAHWEH, we cannot either speak the Truth or speak the true Fact.
Romans 3:4 says the situation of the natural man, “the liar”. The Devil is the father of lies, and there is no truth in him. Therefore, his children are liars as well, John 8:44.
1. Lying in a court of justice, perjury is prohibited.
2. Twisting neighbor’s words is seriously misrepresenting the true fact. It is prohibited.
3. Backbiting and slandering are prohibited. Speaking behind a neighbor’s back in evil and hurtful manner, even if how accurate and true the Fact we speak, is sinful and evil.
Also speaking untrue facts about my neighbor, slandering is evil and prohibited.
4. When we condemn or harshly speak about our neighbor prior to hearing the neighbor’s own words, we commit the Ninth Commandment.
We are warned about such a liar whose final destination is in the burning lake of fire, not in the Kingdom of God, Revelation 21:8; 22:15.)
