(Q & A 111 deals with the positive side of the Eighth Commandment. It is about my duties with my life, money, and possession regarding my neighbor in general, and the poor in need of my help. Merely not stealing is not enough for us. Rather we must further our neighbor’s good in a proactive way. Matthew 7:12 is what Jesus our Lord commands us to abide by on this matter. So, in all our businesses with others, we must always do a fair and square deal with them. Also we must give our money or goods to help the poor, whenever they are in real need. Thus, all the more we need to abide by the command of Jesus in Matthew to do our duties faithfully for a furtherance of our neighbor’s good, and the poor in need.
In 2 Thessalonians 3:10, we have an order that every able- bodied man must work, or else not eat. Therefore, it is evil for any government to give financial support to any able-bodied yet lazy people by means of public welfare money and not require them to be trained for work or to work. Each able-bodied young man is responsible for himself/herself to prepare for some kind of vocation or life’s work. We owe it to our Creator and Redeemer God to prepare ourselves to make a living and to support the financial needs of God’s Kingdom work.
Whatever we have including money and our own lives belong to God not to ourselves. As God’s stewards, we must use all His gifts as God would have them used by us. In doing so, being frugal is virtuous, but stinginess is sinful.
How much amount of money is appropriate for us to give directly to the LORD God in terms of almsgivings and other offerings?
1. All belongs to God, not to us.
2. In the Old Testament times, a tithe – one tenth is required to give to the LORD God directly; And every three years, a tithe to the poor in need; and annually a tithe to the priests and the Levites for their service to the LORD God on behalf of other tribes.
3. In the New Testament times, the tithing system is ceased, since we have no particular Levitical priesthood for it. Nor we have the Temple with the ministering priests who received the tithes from the Israelites on God’s behalf. But still we have the same God Father who commanded His tithing from all of His people gave His only Son to His people for their salvation. Also we have the body of Jesus, the Church, the Temple of the New Testament times. Thus, a better concept is established that our whole being is God’s and is to be used for God’s Kingdom service. Our money, possession, and life must be devoted to God and His cause. Whatever we have for ourselves is a gift from God and Jesus Christ, so out of our gratitude to our Savior and Lord, we must live our life only for Him. It is no longer commanded to give God the tithe of our income, rather the willing givers and our voluntary almsgivings are commended,
2 Corinthians 9:7; Acts 20:35. Therefore, with no specific percentage numbers given to us, we Christians must be more than willing and ever ready to give to God and His Kingdom work whatever we have in proportion to how much God has prospered us. In addition to the money, body, time, talent, material possessions, and the like must be used for God’s Kingdom work and for helping the poor in need.)
