I. 이 세상의 마지막 때에 관한 가르침 (24:1-25:46)
3. 주님의 오심과 그분을 기다림 (24:29-51)
예수님께서 다시 제자들에게 말씀하신 것은 당신의 재림을 어떠한 자세로 제자들이 기다려야 할지에 관한 것이다 (24:32-51). 재림이 아득하게 멀리 다가 올 것인 양 거짓으로 안전하다 여기며 스스로를 속이고 살아서는 안 된다. 반대로 참 제자는 항상 열심으로 재림의 전조들을 관찰하고 그분의 재림을 기꺼이 맞을 준비를 하며 살아야만 한다. 따라서 그분의 재림을 간절히 기다리는 동안 말씀에 순종하는 거룩한 삶의 자세를 가지는 것이 필요하다.
3) 무화과 나무를 예로 들어 설명해 주셨다. 늦봄에 만발하는 무화과 나무를 보며 곧 여름이 올 것을 당연히 알아야 한다. 마찬가지로, 예수님의 제자들은 재림전에 일어나는 징조들을 관찰하고 (24:3-28) 그것들을 볼 때, 주님의 재림이 곧 문 앞에 이르렀음을 알고 주님을 맞을 준비를 해야만 한다.
4) “이 모든 일들”은 당연히 재림 전에 일어날 징조들이다 (24:33). 또한 “이 모든 것들” (24:34) 또한 그러하다. 하지만, 유의해야할 점이 있다. 예수님의 말씀은 예언의 양식을 가지고 있기에, “모든 것들”이나 “모든 일들”이 한꺼번에 다 발생한다는 것이 아니다. 예언들이 그러하듯이 어느 때에 부분적으로 성취되나, 예언 전체의 성취과정에서 미래에는 결국 모든 게 온전히 성취되는 것을 예언하신 것이다. 예수님 당시의 세대에서도 그 예언이 부분적으로 성취되었다. 마찬가지로 우리 또한 그 예언의 온전한 성취를 여전히 기다리고 있다.
5) 예수님께서는 여러 가지 징조들을 예언하시나, 그 징조들이 현재를 사는 제자들 모두에게 매우 중요한 현실로 다가옴을 강조하셨다. 현재의 피조세계에서 (천지 만물에게) 일어나는 모든 징조들에 대한 예언의 말씀 자체는 그러한 현상을 넘어서 영원한 힘을 가지는 것을 강조하신 것이다 (24:35). 특별히 그분의 재림에 관한 예언의 말씀은 결단코 그 능력을 잃어 버릴 수 없다.
6) 육신으로 오신 그리스도로서의 예수님과 하늘의 모든 천사들은 그분의 재림하실 날과 그 시각을 알지 못한다. 이것들을 하나님 아버지께서 자신의 고유권한으로 가지고 계신다.
7) 예수님 재림의 날과 그 시각을 제자들에게 밝혀 주시지 않았기에 제자들에게 위험이 존재한다: 제자들이 주님의 재림하심에 주의를 기울이지 않게 되며, 정작 재림하실 때 준비되지 않고 놀라 맞이하게 되는 위험한 결과를 초래할 수도 있다. 노아 때에 홍수가 덮쳤을 때에도 그리 하였다. 노아의 이웃 사람들은 매일 언제나 그리 살아 왔던 대로, 하나님께서 노아를 통해 그들에게 미리 경고해 주셨음에도 불구하고 귀를 기울이지 않았다. 따라서 그들은 그 멸망의 날을 향해 부주의하고 무모하게 마냥 달려간 것과 같다. 심지어는 노아와 모든 생물들이 방주로 들어 가서 7일 동안을 지내는 동안 하나님께서는 약속하셨던 비를 아직 내리지 않으셨고, 그의 이웃들의 회개를 기다리며 당신의 가지신 인내하심을 그들에게 보여주셨다. 그럼에도 불구하고 노아의 이웃들은 그 기이한 현상들을 통해 주신 경고에 아무도 주의를 기울이지 않았고 하나님께서 마지막 일 주일 동안까지 베푸신 인내를 주의를 기울이지도 않고 기꺼이 거부하였다.
8) 갑자기 결정을 내릴 날과 그 시각이 다가 올 때에는 지구상의 모든 인류가 두 부류의 모임으로 강제적으로 나뉘게 되어 이미 모든 게 늦었다. 모든 인류가 그때까지 생존해 있을 때, 그분의 재림이 한 쪽의 무리에게는 기꺼이 그분을 받아드리는 자세가 나타날 것이다. 다른 무리에게는 그분께서 급작스레 나타나셔서 그들을 거부해 버리는 날이 될 것이다. 아무리 가까운 사이의 사람들이었다 할지라도, 그들 사이에 주님은 갑작스레 완전한 분리를 만드실 것이며, 서로가 영원히 분리되고, 한 쪽은 영원한 복락을 누리게 되고, 나머지 쪽은 영원한 형벌에 처하게 될 것이기 때문이다 (24:40-41).
9) 예수님께서 제자들에게 명령하셨다: 제자들이 언제나 계속하여 맑은 정신으로 깨어 있어 주의를 기울여 그분의 재림을 기다리라고 하신 것이다. 두 가지로 준비하면 된다 하셨다.
(1) 자신의 재림 전에 일어날 징조들을 언제나 관찰하고 연구하라고 명령하셨다. 그분의 갑작스런 재림을 기다리는 모든 참 제자들의 거룩한 의무다 (24:43-44).
(2) 제자들이 그분의 재림을 신실하게 준비하면서 모든 하나님의 명령들에 순종하며 살아 가라고 명령하셨다. 그분의 재림을 깨어 있어 기다리며 주의를 기울이는 동안, 반드시 주님의 계명들을 즐거이 지키라는 명령을 주신 것이다. 자신의 재림시에, 우리가 신실하게 항상 재림을 기다리며 깨어 있어 명령을 순종하고 살아 있다면, 우리에게 상을 주실 것이다. 반면에 부주의 하게 살던 제자들과 불신자들에게는 심판주님이 되시는 예수님께서 영원한 멸망을 가장 극심하고 가혹한 형벌로 선언하시고 내리실 것이다. 그러므로 우리는 마땅히 우리의 모든 힘을 다해서 그분의 재림을 기다리는 동안 우리에게 주신 모든 명령에 순종하는 일상 생활을 가져야만 할 것이다.

Next in His teaching to His disciples (24:32-51), Jesus is concerned with the manner in which a believer (disciple) should await His Second Coming. Any true disciple must not live with a false sense of security, thinking the day is far off. On the contrary, His true disciple must observe and study the signs of the times with eager anticipation, always being ready to meet Jesus (the Son of Man). Thus, we must not live a loose moral living in the present while waiting eagerly for His Second Coming.
3. The fig tree blossomed every spring, thus after the blossom, summer closely followed it. In like manner His disciples, when they perceive those preliminary signs of the great day (24:3-28), will know for certain that the Son of Man’s Coming is right at the door.
4. The generation of Jesus’ disciples certainly will not pass away until “all these things have happened.” Here as a form of the prophetic nature of eschatology, from the perspective of prophecy, this event was telescoped with Jesus’ future. Thus, “all these things” would not come at once, and naturally would be seen only in part by the generation of Jesus’ day.
5. Here Jesus emphasized that the great events He had foretold have real importance for “the here and now.” Indeed, Jesus’ words have everlasting power because they point to a reality that far transcends the temporal creation (here He said “heaven and earth”). His promise to return will never lose its power.
6. As an incarnate Christ, Jesus and all those angels in heaven would not know the exact day and the precise hour of His Second Coming. It is the Father’s exclusive prerogative.
7. The hiddenness of the day of His return and its precise hour presents a great danger to His disciples: They could become careless and that final day of His return could take them by surprise. In Noah’s days, people continuously lived and did their own ordinary businesses without care for God’s warning through Noah. They lived heedlessly and recklessly and rushed toward the impending judgment of God by the Flood. Even they wasted God’s final patience toward them for the whole week after Noah’s family and all creatures entered the Ark.
8. Suddenly, there will be the time of decision, when all the human beings will be divided into two camps. There will then be no more spare time to reflect and repent. At His Second Coming, all the people on earth will be accepted or rejected just as they are at that precise hour. No matter how people were closely related to each other, they will be suddenly separated for eternity.
9. Jesus commanded His disciples: They must be constantly watchful and sober-minded while waiting for His Second Coming. They can be done in two ways.
1) Be watchful to pay attention to the preliminary signs of His Return. It is the holy duty of all His true disciples while awaiting His sudden Return (24:43-44).
2) Prepare yourself faithfully by obeying God’s commandments. While we must be watchful, we must be living faithfully to obey all His commands. At His coming, He will reward us for our faithful watchfulness and obedience. But to the careless disciples and unbelievers the eternal destruction as the harshest punishment is pronounced and executed by the same Judge, Jesus. Therefore, we must work with all our might as we look forward to His Second Coming.
